Event Navigation

The East Side Freedom Library invites you to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr., Day with a screening and discussion of A Huey P. Newton Story.

Monday, January 20th, 2020, 7pm

From a stage play in 1996 to a film in 2002, A Huey P. Newton Story has been a monument to Roger Guenveur Smith’s brilliance and the power of theater to tell stories in compelling ways. ts recognition has included two Drama Desk nominations, a Helen Hayes Award for achievement in acting, two AUDELCO awards, and three NAACP awards. As a film, made with Roger’s long-time collaborators, director Spike Lee and sound designer Marc Anthony Thompson (aka “Chocolate Genius”), it has been honored with two additional NAACP awards, a Best Actor award, and a Peabody Award.

Roger Guenveur Smith is well-known to Twin Cities residents for his work at the Guthrie, the Walker, and Penumbra. In 1999 he performed A Huey P Newton Story at Macalester College and, five years ago, he was interviewed at ESFL by Beth Cleary and Peter Rachleff.

A Huey P. Newton Story was produced by Luna Ray Films and is an original production of BLACK STARZ! in association with PBS and the African Heritage Network.
