“Day of Remembrance: Losing and Reclaiming Home”

Saturday, February 23, 2019, 7pm

Every year, our Japanese American neighbors mark the anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, calling for the incarceration of Japanese Americans.

This year, the Twin Cities Japanese American Citizens League will screen the film, “Dave Tatsuno: Movies and Memories,” which discusses one man’s efforts to create home in camp despite the tragedy of loss. Excerpts from Tatsuno’s rare footage of the life created by incarcerees in his home movie “Topaz” are featured. After the film there will be a panel of survivors of who were confined in incarceration camps and descendants of survivors. They will also present artifacts and visual images from the camps. The panel will be moderated by University of Minnesota Professor and ESFL Board member, Yuichi Onishi.
