The pandemic has been a monumental time to consider police reform and accountability in the Twin Cities. Minneapolis gained enough momentum to put serious steps towards police abolition on the ballot, but the ballot didn’t pass. At the same time, Saint Paul was largely silent on police reform. Where are we headed next?
Join the East Side Freedom Library, and University of Minnesota Professor Michelle Phelps, Hamline University Professor Jason Sole, and members of SEIU for a discussion of the 2021 Minneapolis election as it relates to policing, and what comes next.
Professor Michelle Phelps is an associate professor in the department of sociology at the University of Minnesota. Professor Phelps’ primary study is focused on punishment, policing, and mass incarceration. She is the co-author of the book “Breaking the Pendulum: The Long Struggle Over Criminal Justice”. Professor Phelps is currently working on a new book tentatively entitled “Policing the Progressive City: Race, Violence, and the Future of Public Safety in Minneapolis.”
Professor Jason Sole is a visiting professor at Hamline University. He has worked as a criminal justice educator for the last decade. Professor Sole is a 2013 Bush Fellow, and author of the memoir “From Prison to Ph.D.: A Memoir of Hope, Resilience, and Second Chances”. He has a particular interest in instructing students not only in how the criminal justice system functions, but also how we are socialized to maintain certain perceptions of crime and justice.
SEIU is the Service Employees International Union. SEIU has recently launched a community safety program as an alternative to traditional policing with an ongoing pilot program on the North Side of Minneapolis, and hopefully soon on the East Side of Saint Paul. SEIU members involved in the process will join us to discuss their new program.
We recommend this reading from ORGUP to prepare us for a deeper conversation: Minneapolis Election Reflections.
