I am writing to you today, our community—those who share the values, hope, and vision for a more just and equitable society. I feel the weight of the election results and how it will shape the future of our communities in Minnesota and beyond. Now, more than ever, our team at East Side Freedom Library is committed to standing up for the rights of workers, immigrants, and other marginalized groups.
For over a decade, our vision has always been to build a future rooted in justice and equity. Supporting the most vulnerable among us is at the heart of creating an inclusive society. With this purpose—our work spans beyond the brick walls of the library and the boundary of our neighborhood. Together, we strive to make this vision a reality.
As individuals and as a community, please give yourself the space to honor your emotions. Grieve. Rest. Cry. Do whatever your body and soul need to process the weight of what we face. Seek comfort in the goodness of humanity, in the people you love and who love you. Find your safe spaces, your circles of strength, and hold tight to the support you need. But know this: when you are ready—when the fog of sorrow, anger, and disappointment begins to lift—we will be here with you to dismantle existing systems and design a future we all deserve.
The stakes are high, and in these moments of reckoning, we must stand against the forces of hate and bigotry. Although the hate may have infiltrated into the highest office and threatened the very existence of democracy, we must not allow it to occupy our community. Speak up, take a stand beyond social media posts, and take action to protect our community and society.
Alongside allies throughout our communities, the team at East Side Freedom Library is ready to defend our collective rights, whatever challenges lie ahead.
We are here to stay, and our work has never been more crucial.
Peace, Love, and Solidarity,
Saengmany Ratsabout
Executive Director, East Side Freedom Library
