Why Treaties Matter
Expropriation, Dislocation, Violence, and Resettlement

The East Side Freedom Library, the Lower Phalen Creek Project, the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, and Wakinyan Luta Oyanke are partnering to host the “Why Treaties Matter” exhibit at ESFL through Sunday, April 28. We see this as an opportunity to explore the past, the present, and the future of our communities, in the hopes that we can better understand each other and work together for justice and equity. Many of our neighbors have experienced being pushed out of their homelands, being the victims of violence, and working together to create new lives. On Sunday, April 14, please join us to listen to a panel of immigrants, refugees, and native peoples as they share their experiences and launch a conversation in which we can all take part.

Why Treaties Matter is a collaboration of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. This exhibition was developed with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 and The Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation.
