Why the History of Treaties Matters (Panel)

The East Side Freedom Library, the Lower Phalen Creek Project, the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, and Wakinyan Luta Oyanke are partnering to host the “Why Treaties Matter” exhibit from March 24 through April 28, 2019. The exhibit will be available for viewing whenever the Library is open, and two additional programs on Sunday afternoons at 2PM will follow this one on March 31st: April 14 (a conversation between Native community members and members of immigrant and refugee communities); April 28 (a closing program which will focus on such current issues as the “Indian Mounds Park,” the City Hall murals, and the names of public buildings and spaces for perpetrators of genocide against Native peoples).

On Sunday, March 31, Lakota language teacher and Native American History teacher, Barry Frantum, will facilitate a panel of Dakota and Anishinabe youth in a conversation about their views of this history and its significance. Youth who will speak on the panel: Nolan Berglund, 17, Northern Cheyenne and Oglala Lakota; Miiskogihmiiwan Poupart-Chapman, 17, Lac Du Flambeau Ojibwe; Alyssa Parkhurt, 18, Red Lake Nation; Jada Aljubailah, 18, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe; Summer DuMarce, 21, Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota; Rueben Kitto-Stately, Ojibwe and Dakota. Please join them in the discussion.

Why Treaties Matter is a collaboration of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. This exhibition was developed with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 and The Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation.
