Walking Tour:
Immigration & The Remaking of St. Paul’s East Side
Saturday, June 22, 2019, 10am to noon
Join Peter Rachleff, the Co-Executive Director of the East Side Freedom Library, for a 90 minute walking tour which examines the roles of immigrants and workers in the making and remaking of St. Paul’s East Side over the last 150 years. Explore Swede Hollow’s role as the first site of European settlement in the 1850s. Walk up Payne Avenue and learn about the Great Northern Railroad strike of 1894. Connect and compare the experiences of Swedish, Italian, German, and Irish immigrants in the 19th century, with the experiences of Hmong, Karen, and Mexican immigrants in the 21st century.
Wear comfortable shoes. We’ll meet at the East Side Freedom Library (1105 Greenbrier Street, 55106) at 10am, and carpool to Swede Hollow to begin our tour. Rain date is June 29. Register by June 14 online at www.commed.spps.org, by phone at 651-767-8179 or by email at [email protected]. $20 fee to St. Paul Public Schools.
