and a PANEL DISCUSSION exploring the issues raised by this project
Thursday, November 5, 2020, 7pm
Both programs will premiere on ESFL’s Facebook page and YouTube channel
Garden of the Righteous is a locally produced documentary which honors Yiddish music and the brave individuals who risked their lives to save Jews in Europe. The program weaves together original Yiddish music and stories of fearless individuals from among the thousands of non-Jews who risked their lives to save innocent people during the Holocaust. It features the music of Twin Cities-based Naye Strunes ensemble.
The hour-long program centers the rarely told stories of the Righteous Among the Nations, memorialized in the Garden of the Righteous at the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem. Their bravery is still relevant today, with aching reminders – echoed in the music — to be kind to all we meet, particularly the least among us, to strive at all times to conduct ourselves with honesty and charity and to realize it is not our power, cleverness or wealth on which society depends, but on those who are morally sincere. It asks what we can do to be courageous today, allowing for reflection on compassion during difficult times. Naye Strunes is comprised of Gitl Eisner, founder, composer, and violinist; Gretta Hunstiger on fidl (violin); Beth Albertson on cello; and Diane Benjamin and Stu Janis on tsimbl (hammered dulcimer).
The following evening, join us for a pre-recorded panel discussion in which five scholars—Marty Lewis-Huntsiger, Riane Eisler, Katherine Agnes Huether, Dennis Peter, and Hannah Wilson—explore the issues raised by the documentary and discuss its relevance now. The panel is introduced by Gitl Eisner, the composer of much of the music and the lead organizer of this entire project.
