These have been challenging — and exciting — times for the labor movement. The pandemic has revealed the deep inequities which shape the lives of workers, from safety protocols and work schedules to pay and health benefits. But these challenges have also prompted workers, especially young workers, to organize, particularly in industries which have seen little union presence in the past. Every day, we hear about new campaigns and elections at Starbucks, Apple, Amazon, Activision, and more. While the old brewing industry was long a bastion of unions, the proliferation of “micro” and “craft” breweries has spawned a large number of smaller employers, and they and their workers are now making labor history, too.
Join us on our front lawn to learn the inspiring local story of the Fair State Brewing Cooperative and their workers, now members of UNITE-HERE Local 17. We will hear from both management and union workers while tasting some of the delicious beer they are producing. There will be music as well as speeches, and, after our program, we encourage you to stop in at ESB (East Side Bar), 858 Payne Avenue, a favorite watering hole and restaurant here on the East Side. Come and enjoy some old-fashioned solidarity with some of the labor movement’s newest members.
If you intend to partake of the beer, make sure you bring ID. Please bring masks, as we will require you to remain masked if you enter the building (like to use the restrooms). While we are not charging admission to this event, we do encourage you to make donations to the East Side Freedom Library. We appreciate your support.
