Twelve Angry Men: Community Discussion
June 13, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm CDT
Event Navigation
This event is co-hosted by the East Side Freedom Library and On Stage: Creating a Community Dialogue Around Live Theater.
Join us for a stimulating theater discussion led by local theater educators Wendy Knox, Rajané Katurah, and Clay Man Soo about Twelve Angry Men, a play that Theatre Latte Da will be presenting from June 8 – July 17. The discussion will focus on some of the themes in the play, tying in current events, personal values, and narratives.
Written by Reginald Rose. In form, Twelve Angry Men is a courtroom drama; in purpose, it’s a crash course in those passages of the U.S. Constitution that promise defendants a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. In a small New York City jury room, on “the hottest day of the year,” twelve men debate the fate of a young Puerto Rican defendant charged with murdering his father. This is the world premiere of this new American musical, adapted from one of America’s greatest dramas. Some questions include: How to separate politics and moral values in the jury room? Is it easy to you speak your truth? What is the gender and racial authority in political decision making groups?

On Stage: Creating a Community Dialogue Around Live Theater is a fiscally sponsored program through Springboard for the Arts, and is designed to strengthen community support by reaching a wider “non-traditional” theater audience. This program aims to give participants a new perspective on the possibilities of live theater and in dramatic literature in general. Discussions touch on important ethical and civic questions, as well as other themes developed in the chosen works. In addition to community events, On Stage holds discussions in a variety of college and high school classes (in-person and online) in an effort to get a younger audience to see live theater.
In addition to this discussion with community members, On Stage will be facilitating ten other discussions based around this play with over 150 Twin Cities college students!
