How do we learn how to live if not for the rules we live by? A young Korean American woman has lived her life according to the random and unyielding rules her father has set until one day she discovers a lie that upends her life. Seeking answers, she embarks on a journey to Korea, a country she hasn’t known since emigrating at age two. Hoping to better understand her parents, she immerses herself in life in Seoul, relearning the language and forming friendships that will allow her a window into the world her family left behind. But just as they live with ghosts from the past, the specter of her violent and painful childhood continues to haunt her, leaving her to question how much is already decided for us and how much we can change.
A graduate of Macalester College, Sophia Epony Kim is an actor and writer. A founding member of the Asian American theater company Theater Mu, she has acted in theater and television in the United States and Korea. She was a Hertog Fellow in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Hunter College (CUNY) and a participant in Sewanee Writers’ Conference. The recipient of multiple grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, she is currently working on her first novel about Koreans in the diaspora.
Sophia’s project is supported by the Creative Support for Individuals grant by the Minnesota State Arts Board.
