The East Side Freedom Library invites you to an evening of

The Music of Paul Motian
featuring
Steve Hirsh, Larry McDonough, and Richard Terrill

Friday, July 26, 2019, 8pm

As a percussionist and a composer, Paul Motian was a major force in the creative American music known as “jazz.” For half a century, from 1954 to 2005, he worked with a wide range of innovators in rethinking the connections between rhythmic pulse and improvised melodies. His collaborations read like a who’s who of the path-breaking improvisers, including Thelonius Monk, Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, and Bill Frisell. Since his death in 2011, there has been a wave of posthumous releases of his work. Whether you are a devotee of Motian’s work or just curious, join us as three distinguished and creative local musicians bring a selection of his compositions to life.

Steve Hirsh is well-known to the East Side Freedom Library community. He has performed several times with his group, Le Voyage, and he has taken the lead in the creation of Sunday afternoon open sessions, called “Sonic Expressions.” While he began his musical journey playing rock and blues in the 1970s and 1980s, he has become a dedicated creator of improvised music. In addition to ESFL, Steve has performed recently at Khyber Pass, Jazz Central, Black Dog Cafe, and the Cedar Cultural Center.

Larry McDonough has performed around the world and has released nine recordings as a leader, some of which rose to heights in Roots Music and Jazz Album charts. He was inducted into the Minnesota Rock Country Hall of Fame. Larry is also a lawyer and a law professor, honored by William Mitchell College of Law as one of “100 Who Made a Difference” over the 100 year history of the school.

Richard Terrill is also an experienced creator of innovative music. He has played with nationally and internationally prominent band leaders and he has been playing with Larry McDonough since 2001. He is a retired English professor from Minnesota State University-Mankato, and, in 2003, received the Minnesota Book Award for Poetry for his collection, Coming Late to Rachmaninoff.
