The East Side Freedom Library invites you to join us in commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,. Day by discussing The Freedom Struggle is a Labor Struggle.

Register here for this event to receive the Zoom link.

The events of the last year have pushed us to consider the intersections between race, class, gender, nationality, and sexual orientation. Our awareness of the racialized inequities in access to healthcare and housing, the risks faced by “essential” undocumented workers from farm fields to meat-packing plants, the daily threats endured by immigrants and people of color, manifested by police, white supremacist militias and mobs, has reached a new level, along with the largest anti-racist grassroots movement in American history.

This year’s commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day provides us with an opportunity to place this past year’s experiences in an historical context. We invite you to join us, via Zoom, for an unrecorded conversation which will be moderated by ESFL’s Peter Rachleff and Clarence White. We ask you to register here. When you register you will receive not only a link to the Zoom meeting, but also a link to the award-winning documentary film, “At the River I Stand,” which tells the story of the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike, during which Dr. King was murdered. We will also provide a brief context-setting conversation with Prof. William Hart of the Macalester College Religious Studies Department. You will also receive a link to an essay by activist scholar Robin D.G. Kelley, “The Freedom Struggle is a Labor Struggle,” just published in Against the Current. We encourage you to engage these materials in preparation for our conversation.

We look forward to talking with you.
