February 9, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm CST

Event Navigation

Sunday, February 9th, 2020, 1-3pm

The United States has come dangerously close to war with Iran, but most Americans can’t locate Iran on a map. This two-hour program combines a slide show presentation of photos by recent visitors from Minnesota to Iran with presentations by academic experts.

A panel discussion and question and answer period will follow the presentations.

The presenters will include:

Shaherzad Ahmadi received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation on borderlands of modern Iran and Iraq focuses on the socioeconomic independence of border dwellers and the long-term social and political consequences of porous borders in the region.

Sima Shakhsari is an assistant professor in the Department of Gender, Women’s & Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota. They have a PhD in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University and have held postdoctoral positions at the University of Houston and the University of Pennsylvania. Their book manuscript, Politics of Rightful Killing: Civil Society, Gender, and Sexuality in Weblogistan (Duke University Press, 2020), provides an analysis of Weblogistan as a site of cybergovernmentality, where loaned life is subjected to a pending death in the name of rights.

Arash Mahnanis a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota and Vice President of Iranian Culture House, a student organization. Since 2016, he has been involved in promoting Iranian culture and organizing cultural events in Minnesota.
