August 26, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm CDT
Event Navigation
The East Side Freedom Library is dedicated to the propositions that
- We can gain valuable understanding when the experiences of contemporary immigrants are put in conversation with the experiences of earlier communities of immigrants.
- The arts are a vital vehicle to promote these conversations.
We are delighted to be working with two great artistic organizations – Sod House Theater and Black Label Movement – and their talented performers, as they prepare to offer their adaptation of a classical Swedish play in the East Side’s beloved Swede Hollow this September. On Monday evening, August 26, we invite you to join us to learn more about this project and to begin the process of conversation.
On the weekends of September 14, 21, and 28, audiences will set off on an outdoor, guided, theatrical promenade through Swede Hollow Park, stopping along the way to experience moving vignettes within a recreated world evoking the early history of the Swedish immigration of the 1850s. Using August Strindberg’s play The Ghost Sonata as a starting point of inspiration, a great cast of performers will bring to life the community that once lived there, sharing tales that resonate with the ongoing stories and experiences of today’s East Siders. Sod House Theater and Black Label Movement have a long history of multidisciplinary collaboration, creating space for public dialogue and action, and examining and engaging the human condition to inspire vivid lives.
We hope you are as intrigued by this project as we are – and that you’d like to learn more about it. We also know that the artistic team wants to learn more about today’s East Side communities. This evening will be a great opportunity for us to meet each other and share some stories.
