Slavery and the Development of American Capitalism

May 19, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

Event Navigation

The East Side Freedom Library and the Saint Paul Recovery Act Reparations Reading Group invite you to our monthly conversation: Slavery and the Development of American Capitalism.

We will be reading and discussing an interview with historian Edward Baptist, “How Slavery Became America’s First Big Business.” In this 2019 interview, Baptist connects his brilliant book, The Half Has Never Been Told (published in 2014) with the issues raised in the past five years by Black Lives Matter and other racial justice organizations. For this conversation, we will be joined by a special guest, Anita Belle, co-chair of the N’Cobra (National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, founded 1987) chapter and Reparations Union in Detroit.

To receive a link to “How Slavery Became America’s First Big Business,” and a link to the Zoom invitation, please email info@eastsidefreedomlibrary.org.

Newcomers are always welcome.
