Roseville History Book Club: Slavery’s Reach
Wednesday, November 20, 1 p.m.
Roseville Library, 2180 North Hamline Avenue (upstairs Boardroom)
Join the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the Ramsey County Library and the East Side Freedom Library for this month’s installment of the History Book Club as we read and discuss Slavery’s Reach: Southern Slaveholders in the North Star State, by Christopher Lehman.
When American slavery was legal, Minnesota’s residents sold real estate to investors who enslaved African Americans in the South. This presentation looks at Minnesota’s communities and institutions that benefited from plantation money, the enslavers who bought the land, and the slaves whose labor made the money for investment possible.
Participation is free and open to the public. Copies of the book are available at your local library and local, independent bookstores.
Also know that Christopher Lehman will be at the East Side Freedom Library on December 10. Watch our website events calendar for details!
(Note: There will be no History Book Club for the Month of December. Look for us again in January when we will discuss Megan Marsnik’s novel “Under Ground,” a women’s perspective on the 1916 labor strife on the Iron Range.)
