The conversation about reparations continues here in Saint Paul. Over the past three years we have explored the history of institutional racism in the U.S., from the transatlantic slave trade to the construction of the interstate highway system. We have also been investigating how other communities, such as Evanston, Illinois, and Asheville, North Carolina, have been engaging these issues. Now, the state of California has taken up the reparations question. What can we learn from their process?
Here are three short readings which explore the work in California:
- California Reparations Task Force Releases Interim Report Detailing Harms of Slavery and Systemic Discrimination on African Americans
- A Former Sundown Town Passed Reparations and Rent Control. Now It’s Fighting to Keep Them.
- Reparations Get Real
