Event Navigation
The East Side Freedom Library and the St. Paul Recovery Act Reading Group invite you to the November meeting of our Reparations Reading Group, Rondo: Its Place in History and Its Place in Our Discussion of Reparation.
Register to join this event on Zoom.
For nearly two years our reading group has convened monthly, exploring the history of institutionalized racism in the United States, from slavery to convict labor and sharecropping, from Jim Crow to the migration north, from police violence to mass incarceration. We have also examined the work being done in other cities, such as Evanston, Illinois, and Asheville, North Carolina. Our journey in self-education and advocacy has helped bring about the St. Paul City Council’s resolution in support of truth-telling and reparations. It is time for us to take a closer look at our own community’s history, and we will begin with the story of the Rondo community.
We suggest you read:
From Ashes to Asphalt: St. Paul’s Systematic Destruction of Black Neighborhoods, an article on St. Paul’s destruction of Rondo by Emma Nelson.
We also suggest you watch this 10 minute video: Saint Paul’s Past: Rondo.
And we encourage you to rent ($3) this new documentary: Rondo: Beyond the Pavement.
Joining us for this conversation will be two community activists, Nathaniel Khaliq and Eddie English.
We look forward to seeing you on November 10.
