June 15, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm CDT

Register to attend the event on Zoom or watch it live streamed to ESFL’s Facebook page.
This event will feature a presentation by Tsione Wolde-Michael, Curator of African American Social Justice History, at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.
Juneteenth has long been celebrated as the holiday marking the final end of slavery in the United States, the date when enslaved women, men, and children in Texas were informed of their emancipation. While we will open with a presentation, we intend our virtual gathering to be primarily a conversation. We suggest that participants prepare for this program by reading:
- What is Juneteenth? by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
- Annette Gordon-Reed on Texas history and growing up there in the ’60s and ’70s in The Harvard Gazette
The daughter of Ethiopian immigrants, Tsione Wolde-Michael grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Macalester College. She has pursued graduate work in Public History at Harvard University and has worked at both the National Museum of African American History & Culture and the Smithsonian Museum, where she is now leading a project in “decolonizing the museum.” You can learn more about her here.
When ESFL opened in June 2014, our very first public event was a celebration of Juneteenth, featuring a presentation by Ms. Wolde-Michael. We are thrilled to welcome her back!
