Last month’s Reparations Reading Group conversation focused on the first phase of the Civil Rights Movement, from the March on Washington Movement of WWII to the initial struggles for the integration of public transportation and education. Participants expressed interest in exploring the ways that the breakthrough legislation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 represented both new achievements for the movement against institutional racism and the containment of that movement. This month we will tap into a variety of readings that will enable us to engage these questions. Links to some of the readings are below, and, if you email us at [email protected], we will email you PDFs of the other readings.
- “How the Democratic Party Shut Out the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party”
- “The Civil Rights Act Was a Victory Against Racism. But Racists Also Won”
- “The Politics of Passing 1964’s Civil Rights Act”
- “The Civil Rights Movement Distorted: Weaponizing History Against Black Lives Matter”
Please email us at [email protected] to receive PDFs of:
- “Class and Politics in the Mississippi Movement: An Analysis of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party Delegation”
