The East Side Freedom Library and the East Side Study Collective invite you to participate in reading Capital, a reading and discussion process over four months.
February – May 2020
In a rapidly heating world beset with resurgent ethno-nationalisms and right-wing authoritarianism, ever-continuing settler colonial projects of elimination, and the “bad infinity” of endless capital expansion where eight men control as much wealth as half of the global population, it is again time to read Capital. Over the next four months we will read Volume One of Marx’s Capital in its entirety, with the goal of understanding the text on Marx’s terms while contextualizing it to our historical present and the exigencies of our political struggles.
Beginning in February, this group will meet monthly for four Saturday mornings. We welcome anyone willing to commit to reading, no matter your prior history with Marx/Marxism. We particularly welcome those organizing for racial, environmental, and economic justice, and we see collective study as an opportunity for coalition building across movements. We hope that participants can commit to attending all four sessions, but we understand that may not always be possible.
- Saturday, February 15, 10am-noon: Chapters 1-9
- Saturday, March 14, 10am-noon: Chapters 10-15
- Saturday, April 11, 10am-noon: Chapters 15 (cont.)-24
- Saturday, May 9, 10am-noon: Chapters 25-33
If you have questions or know you would like to participate, please reach out to this project’s organizer, Travis Sands (Metro State Literature & Gender Studies), at [email protected].
