In 2019, the East Side Freedom Library partnered with ABC Reality, Dayton’s Bluff Neighborhood Housing Services, the Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing, Payne Phalen District Council and others to host a summer of programming focused on the racial disparities among homeownership in the Twin Cities. One pivotal event was our screening of the 2019 documentary Jim Crow of the North directed by Daniel Bergin. The year following the series, the East Side Freedom Library launched our own Housing Justice program, which has grown to be an important part of the work we are doing here at ESFL.
Three years later we invite you to return to the conversation with us as we host a discussion between Daniel Bergin, housing scholar Rebecca Walker, and our Housing Justice team. We hope to discuss the impact of Jim Crow of the North, research on housing disparities, and how our Housing Justice team has approached the East Side’s housing disparities at a grassroots level.
Daniel Bergin is Twin Cities Public Television’s Executive Producer and the producer for films such as Jim Crow of the North, Citizen, Out North and many others. He is a recent recipient of a Silver Circle Emmy, an award given to those who have made a significant contribution to television. Dan is a longtime Minnesota resident who has worked tirelessly over the last three decades using film to advocate for justice and advance education across our state.
Rebecca Walker is a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Her work centers on the intersection of climate change, resiliency, housing and combating “green gentrification”. She has studied how housing and environmental policy have shaped urban landscapes. Rebecca was recently co-author of a study entitled “Advancing Water Equity Demands New Approaches to Sustainability Science”. Rebecca’s work using mapping software to advance environmental justice is being used across the Twin Cities as we work to create a brighter future for all.
East Side Freedom Library’s Housing Justice team is made up of Ben Werner and Sidney Stuart. Together they are working to organize the diverse communities of the East Side. Their work includes education around housing, tenant organizing, anti-displacement work, artist activism and more.
