Is it possible to reform the U.S. police under our present system? What can fighters for justice like Black Lives Matter learn from the Cuban experience?
August Nimtz, Jr., Professor of Political Science, African American & African Studies, University of Minnesota and co-coordinator of the Minnesota Cuba Committee, will discuss how the Cuban police force was transformed after the triumph of the 1959 Revolution from one of the cruelest institutions of the Batista dictatorship to one in which the police are unarmed and are trained to deal with people in a humane way. Nimtz will explain how Cuba’s police force has its roots in the Rebel Army and its exemplary behavior in the areas it liberated in the 25-month armed struggle from December 1956 to January 1, 1959.
