Performance and Info Session for the No Territory Band Black Understudy Program
Monday, January 21, 2019 at 3pm
“Jazz” is black music, but one finds few black players in the most prominent and innovative circles of the Twin Cities jazz scene. To encourage the performing and composing of creative improvised music by a younger generation of local black musicians, Davu Seru is putting out a call for black musicians, 18 to 30, who play any of the following (unamplified) instruments:
- brass (especially trombone and trumpet)
- woodwinds (especially clarinet & baritone saxophone)
- bowed string (especially violin, viola, & cello)
Understudies are invited to sit in on monthly rehearsals, where they will have the opportunity to learn the No Territory Band repertoire and to eventually sub for current “1” call players.
This Performance and Info Session is open to anyone interested in the blues and African polyrhythmic musical traditions and in treating the rules of idiom, form, and score as meant to be broken.
