Join us for a stimulating theater discussion led by local theater educators Austene Van (Director of the play), Ansa Akyea, and Sun Mee Chomet about Passing Strange, a play that Yellow Tree Theatre and New Dawn Theatre will be co-producing from April 8 – May 8. The discussion will focus on some of the themes in the play, tying in current events, personal values and narratives.
Written by Stew. Directed by Austene Van. Passing Strange is a bold, cutting edge rock musical which transports us across the dividing lines of place, identity and conventional theater. A young Bohemian pilots us from black middle-class America to Amsterdam and Berlin on a quest to discover his personal and artistic authenticity. His intense, humorous, and soulful story moves us beyond the limits of sex, drugs and rock & roll and into “the real.” Passing Strange is a comedy-drama rock musical about a young African American’s artistic journey of self-discovery in Europe, with strong elements of philosophical existentialism, metafiction, and the artistic journey. The play is an autobiography of sorts of Stew (the narrator) and was based on a book of the same name. Reserve tickets to see the show here!
The play is being performed at Yellow Tree Theatre (320 5th Ave SE, Osseo, MN 55369) from April 8 – May 8. Use Promo Code: ONSTAGE for $10 tickets to see Passing Strange (not valid for Saturday performance).

On Stage: Creating a Community Dialogue Around Live Theater is a fiscally sponsored program through Springboard for the Arts, and is designed to strengthen community support by reaching a wider “non-traditional” theater audience. This program aims to give participants a new perspective on the possibilities of live theater and in dramatic literature in general. Discussions touch on important ethical and civic questions, as well as other themes developed in the chosen works. In addition to community events, On Stage holds discussions in a variety of college and high school classes (in-person and online) in an effort to get a younger audience to see live theater.
In addition to this discussion with community members, On Stage will be facilitating twelve other discussions based around this play with over 300 Twin Cities college students!
