Sunday, October 27th, 3pm
Naye Strunes is a Klezmer Quartet led by Judith Eisner. Naye Strunes means New Strings in Yiddish. They perform traditional and original Klezmer music for various events and venues. Currently the group is performing a fundraising program for Doctor’s Without Borders titled “Garden of the Righteous.”
Although a quartet the ensemble has five members:
Judith Eisner who plays the violin, octave violin and Turkish fiddle;
Gretta Hunstiger who plays the violin and the octave violin;
Diane Benjamin who plays the tsimbl/cimbalom;
Beth Albertson who plays the violincello;
and Stu Janis who also plays the tsimbl/cimbalom and sometimes trades places with Diane for different events.
Leviticus 19:16 says: “You shall not stand indifferently beside the blood of your neighbor.” More than 24,000 people risked their lives to save victims of the Holocaust. Designated as Righteous Among the Nations, these courageous individuals have been memorialized by trees planted in their honor at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Weaving together original Yiddish music and the stories of Righteous Gentiles, the program gives audience members an opportunity to reflect on the extent of courage and compassion during perilous times.
