Mohamed’s Dream: A Book and a Look at a Difficult but Hopeful Piece of St. Paul History

November 13, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm CST

Event Navigation

Mohamed Fofana was one of two 10-year-olds killed in a landslide May 22, 2013 during a fossil-hunting trip to Saint Paul’s Lilydale Park. His family and other community members are working to complete a West African school and medical clinic that honors his wishes to help others expressed in drawings and a school report done shortly before his death.

Now a new book, Mohamed’s Dream: Overcoming tragedy and cover up from the Midwest to West Africa by Jon Kerr aims to further that fundraising effort as well as provide background and investigative information on the Lilydale Park tragedy and followup. All proceeds from sales are being devoted to projects in African communities where Mohamed and his family lived before their immigration to Minnesota.

Jon Kerr is a long-time journalist, and former West Sider, whose writing on the landslide appeared in City Pages and elsewhere. He has since traveled to Guinea, Africa with Mohamed’s father and interviewed many others to provide a comprehensive look at a subject that is both painful and hopeful.
