Making Labor History: Saint Paul’s East Side and the Great Northern Railroad Strike of 1894
November 12, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CST
Event Navigation
Saint Paul was at the heart of a huge labor drama in April, 1894. Railroad workers, led by Eugene Debs, challenged wage cuts imposed by “robber baron” James J. Hill, and Minneapolis flour magnate Charles Pillsbury stepped in to mediate. East Side residents and locations were at the center of this struggle. Labor historian Peter Rachleff, Executive Director of the East Side Freedom Library, will discuss this community’s impact on these historic events.
