In 1961, over 350,000 young Cubans, the majority of whom were women, volunteered for the National Literacy Campaign. Despite the Bay of Pigs invasion, launched during the Campaign, Cuban youth were able to reduce the nation’s illiteracy rate to less than 4% in one year. The film will be showed followed by a talk with visiting Cuban educational scholar Dr. Felipe Perez Cruz.

Sponsored by the ESFL, The Minnesota Cuba Committee and the following programs of the University of St. Thomas: Faculty Development, Leadership, Policy & Administration, Modern & Classical Languages, English, American Culture and Difference, Luann Dummer Center for Women, UST Libraries, Office of International Students & Scholars, Justice and Peace Studies.
