The stories of American workers’ lives are much too little known. Similarly, the stories of African Americans’ lives are too rarely told. What happens when we investigate the intersection of these two narratives? Such a journey can yield significant insight into the making and remaking of key structures in our country’s history, particularly those that revolve around race and class. They can also reveal the creativity and agency of people in the face of great challenges.

This session of our Labor History Reading Group invites us on a literal journey on the moving workplaces of railroad dining car waiters in the mid-20th century. Our tour guide is James Robinson, an Assistant Professor in Ethnic and Religious Studies (with an emphasis in Black Studies) at Metropolitan State University. James is offering us his essay (still in progress) to read: “Walking From St. Paul to Seattle – Running on the Road”: An Essay Towards the History of the American Railroad Dining Car Workers, A View From the St. Paul Roads of the 1920s-1930s.”

Please email us at info@eastsidefreedomlibrary.org and we will email you a copy of Prof. Robinson’s essay.
