Three years ago, the Arizona town of Bisbee marked the 100th anniversary of its darkest day, the day when local authorities rounded up 1200 immigrant miners, loaded them on a train, and shipped them into the desert, where they were forced to get off and fend for themselves – and warned to never return.

ESFL invites you to watch Robert Greene’s acclaimed film, “Bisbee ’17,” on your own time before the evening of August 26th via a temporarily available link.

A well-known reviewer wrote that this film is “about labor relations in the United States, a country that prides itself on having a democratic spirit yet has a long history of breaking the back of labor whenever it gets too uppity, and brutalizing and relocating or imprisoning people (including Native Americans and Japanese Americans and now Mexican Americans) who’ve been deemed enemies by the ruling class, which has historically consisted of rich, white, native-born men.”

ESFL is also making available to you an article by labor law historian Jonathan Rosenblum, “Felix Frankfurter and the Bisbee Deportation,” which you will find on pp. 131-168 of this special issue of the journal WESTERN LEGAL HISTORY, which you can access here. You are, of course, welcome to read other articles in this issue, too.

As a special treat, we will be joined for our conversation by filmmaker Robert Greene and historian Jonathan Rosenblum. Please register for the Zoom link – and do your homework.
