How Slavery Became America’s First Big Business

June 16, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

Event Navigation

Tuesday, June 16, 2020, 6:30-8:00pm via Zoom

Protests and activism have put a spotlight on racism in the United States. An historical perspective can help us understand how things got to be the way are, and it can help us inform our visions of social change. This month, join us in discussing this interview with historian Edward Baptist.

The author of THE HALF HAS NEVER BEEN TOLD: SLAVERY AND THE MAKING OF AMERICAN CAPITALISM, Edward Baptist is professor of history at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. His book has had a huge impact on historians’ thinking, from his reliance on the WPA “Slave Narratives” to position enslaved men and women as interpreters of their own experiences to his argument that, far from being a “pre-modern” form of economic organization, the slave system of production was foundational to the development of American capitalism.

This conversation will be held online. If you would like to join us, please email [email protected] to receive the Zoom invitation. This will be a conversation, and we expect participants to have read this interview.
