Here in the Twin Cities, we are fortunate to live in a community where theater artists—playwrights, actors, directors, set and lighting designers, and more—are willing to challenge our conventional representations of gender and race. This process involves not only the plot but also the very construction of the characters. This month, two new plays are being produced which merit not only seeing but also discussing. Pangea World Theater will present TeAda Productions’ “Masters of the Currents,” a play about Micronesian youth on their journey of identity formation in Hawaii, and the History Theater will present “Dirty Business,” a musical about women spies during WWII.
How do theater artists create the representations they put on stage for us to watch? What is our responsibility as audience members? Join us—and playwright Laurie Flanigan Hegge (“Dirty Business”) and writers/performers Ova Saopeng and Leilani Chan—for what is certain to be an animated conversation.
