From Then to Now: Immigration and the (Re)Making of Saint Paul’s East Side
July 23, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm CDT
Event Navigation
This two hour walking tour examines the role to immigration in the making and remaking of St Paul’s east Side over the last 150 years. Starting at Swede Hollow, the tour focuses on Payne Avenue’s role as a center of immigrant life, from Swedish, Italian, and German immigrants of the 19th century, to the Hmong, Mexican, and Salvadoran immigrants of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. During the 1.5 mile tour, participants will be drawn in to a conversation between the past and present as they learn about the street’s history while smelling and hearing the present. The tour will end at the East Side Freedom Library.
We will meet at the East Side Freedom Library at 9:30am. A shuttle to Swede Hollow will be provided. The walking tour is free and will last approximately two hours.
Space is limited. Please RSVP at [email protected] to reserve your spot.
