THE BLACK BOX
While going through her late grandmother’s belongings, a grieving young woman finds a secret diary written by her grandmother following the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Its contents lead her to discover a slow-burning love story, as well as inspiring her with the passions of the times that helped create the identity of a country.
The movie, based on the diary, contains her historic and emotional experiences from the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959, to March 5, 1960, the date of the funerals of the victims of the sabotage on the French ship La Coubre in the port of Havana, an incident that resulted in about 100 dead and 400 injured.
The Cuban Government has repeatedly denounced the involvement of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the explosions as part of many attempts to intimidate citizens and overthrow the revolutionary process.
In the light of the attempts to terrorize the people into desisting from the newly initiated path, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro (1926-2016) urged Cubans to resist and fight off until the last drop of blood, which was summarized in the motto “Homeland or Death.”
Director Enrique (Kiki) Álvarez was born in Havana in 1961. He has degrees in Art History, Communication Theory and Screenwriting. He is currently head of the Directing Program at the International Film and Television School (EICTV). He has directed internationally acclaimed video-art, short and feature-length films, among them “La Ola”, “Jirafas” (Giraffes) which premiered in Rotterdam, “Venecia” -the first Cuban film produced through crowdfunding (premiered in Toronto), and “Sharing Stella”. “La Caja Negra” / “The Black Box” is his most recent feature.
