The East Side Freedom Library invites you to extend your Labor Day celebration by viewing the rarely seen classic film
SALT OF THE EARTH
Tuesday, September 4, 7pm
In 1954, a group of filmmakers, writers, and actors who had been expelled from Hollywood during the Red Scare came together to make a film about a 1949 strike of Latino and white zinc miners in Arizona. The story of the strike centered on the remarkable roles played by women. As they came to tell this story, largely with workers playing themselves, the filmmakers understood what they were doing as committing a “crime to fit the punishment,” making a movie that would have been worth getting kicked out of Hollywood for. Join us to watch and discuss this amazing film.
