Uncertain times throughout the pandemic have many considering what it means to have housing security. Although the work is not new, a historic win around Rent Stabilization in Saint Paul has brought renewed energy to the promise of tenant organizing. Join the East Side Freedom Library, Edain Alimentario of Inquilinxs Unidxs por Justicia (United Renters For Justice) in Minneapolis, and Javier Miranda for a discussion on building tenant power. Both presenters have experience forming tenants unions and perspectives to consider in starting a tenants union and organizing for tenant power.
Edain Alimentario is a lead organizer with Inquilinxs unidxs por Justicia. She has plenty of experience and successes in organizing tenants unions in Minneapolis. Inqulinixs unidxs por justicia is also a part of the Minneapolis campaign, Home To Stay Mpls, advocating for a strong rent stabilization policy.
Javier Miranda (he/him) has lived in St.Paul since 2020. Before moving here from Iowa Javier organized renters in his apartment building in his college town of Ames Iowa. He currently works construction and continues to hold a passion for building tenant power in the Twin Cities.
