SONGS AND SOUNDS OF TRANQUILITY II
Please join visionary composer, improviser, and instrument builder, Douglas R. Ewart and his multi-disciplinary ensemble, Quasar, for their second performance at the East Side Freedom Library in Saint Paul. The Freedom Library is a new Twin-Cities research center and cultural venue located in an historic Carnegie Library. It focuses on working class, immigration, and African American history, and the ways of representing those histories in performance, story, music, and visual art.
Quasar features Mankwe Ndosi, Leah Nelson, Jacqueline Ultan, Carei Thomas, Stephen Goldstein, and Douglas R. Ewart. Their performance will include poetry and dance, and they will make music using mbira, bells, percussion, cello, piano, gongs, laptop, I-pad, crepuscular stick, didgeridoo, flutes, English horn and more.
In September 2014, Quasar’s premiere performance at the East Side Freedom Library was a profound experience for the audience and the performers alike. Together, we discovered how this beautiful space provides opportunities to make and appreciate rich sounds. This second performance, coming between Christmas and New Year’s, will embody the sonic creation of quiet environments. It will feature ancient instruments as well as movement and sounds created by new technologies. Join us for this unique combination of ancient, present, and futuristic sounds.
