AUGUST 12: History Panel Discussion and The Kung Fu Zombies Saga: Shaman Warrior Vs. Cannibals
Time: 2pm-6pm
Location: Luminary Arts Center: 700 First N St., Minneapolis MN 55401
Throughout all levels of education, we have observed a significant gap in the curriculum regarding the history of the Vietnam War era, particularly the Secret War that the U.S. waged on Laos.
The play “The Kung Fu Zombies Saga” addresses this legacy by bringing the audience to a zombie-ridden Laos to unearth the impacts of war, colonialism and mental illness. Come see this world premiere, and then attend a post-show panel discussion with Aleena Inthaly, Chief of Staff of Legacies of War and Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay, playwright and creator of Kung Fu Zombies Saga: Shaman Warrior Vs. Cannibals.
Our goal with this discussion is to uplift SE Asian American communities and permanently preserve and protect the unique contributions, experiences, cultures, and languages which have not been recognized. We will provide historical context as experts in our field and discuss the influences of our shared history within the Kung Fu Zombies Saga play.
*Note: This event requires you to either purchase advance tickets for the matinee show on August 12 or showing box office staff your play program from an earlier “Kung Fu Zombies Saga” performance you attended. You can purchase tickets through this link ($10-60).
AUGUST 13: Community Conversation: Storytelling & Art as Activism
Time: 1pm-4pm
Location: Roseville County Library, 2180 Hamline Ave N, Roseville, MN 55113
Meeting Room: RV- Community Program Room
Opening the event with a mapping and timeline activity, participants should bring 1-3 items that will aid in telling their story. The SEAD Project will lead a conversation on healing through storytelling that will empower participants to connect to their history and engage with their communities. Following the storytelling workshop, Legacies of War and Mines Advisory Group America will lead a conversation on how our stories connect to advocacy, specifically to U.S. funding for UXO removal in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Participants will be briefed on the status of land clearance, victim assistance, and mine risk education in those regions and prompted with ways to get involved with an upcoming letter writing campaign to Congress. U.S. Representatives from Minnesota have been invited to give remarks.
