Challenges and Prospects of the Democratization Process in Ethiopia

November 10, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CST

Event Navigation

Sunday, November 10th, 11am-1pm

The Twin Cities is home to many communities—Oromo, Eritrean, Amharic, Somali—whose roots lay in the Horn of Africa. For decades, this region has been a site of political upheaval. Ethnic and religious minorities have faced particular challenges, as have political activists who have sought to create progressive change. One consequence of this instability has been the out-migration which has become the basis for diasporic communities in Europe, Australia, and North America, including here in the Twin Cities.

Here, people from diverse communities have begun new conversations, considering their past, present, and future. Recent developments in Ethiopia—including the election of Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister, the negotiation of a peace treaty with Eritrea, ending decades of conflict, and the outbreak of inter-ethnic violence in the past month—have awakened both hopes and fears among our East African neighbors.

Please join us for a panel discussion and community conversation about these recent developments and their impact from the Horn of Africa to the Twin Cities.
