Brownbody’s Tracing Sacred Steps: Talk to the Artists
May 31, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm CDT
Event Navigation
THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE BOTH IN PERSON (ON OUR LAWN) AND ZOOM!
Join Brownbody and the East Side Freedom Library on Tuesday, May 31 for a conversation with Deneane Richburg, Tomasina Petrus and the skaters of Brownbody’s upcoming production, Tracing Sacred Steps! Brownbody Black artistic company that employs a blend of modern dance, theater, social justice, and figure skating.
Sign up to join this event HERE!
Grounded in African diaspora perspectives, Brownbody builds artistic experiences that disrupt biased narratives by making space for Black and brown people in spaces for which there are barriers to inclusion, like the ice rink.
Brownbody’s newest evening-length work Tracing Sacred Steps blends modern dance, social justice practice, figure skating, and Ring Shout, a counterclockwise, sacred circle dance that appears to have been done universally among [enslaved Africans] and later among freedmen.
Joining us for this conversation will be:
- Deneane Richburg, Artistic/executive director and founder
- Lela Aisha Jones, Associate Artistic Director
- Thomasina Petrus, Legacy Artist
- Steven Smith, Legacy Skating Artist
