Black on Ice: A Conversation on Cultures and Contexts
Monday, April 22, 2019 at the East Side Freedom Library
Join Brownbody at the East Side Freedom Library for an evening of conversation around the cultural significance of black skaters. Black skaters have grown up, trained, and competed in various ice sports and arts that are dominated by white aesthetics and culture. In a conversation moderated by Clarence White (East Side Freedom Library), skaters including White, Brownbody’s Artistic Director Deneane Richburg and collaborators Ruth Gebremedhin, Corley Lovett Jr, LaJuné McMillian, Steven Smith, Mariyah Thurston Gerber, Le Patin Libre’s Samory Ba, and the Minnesota Wild’s J.T. Brown, will share their personal stories.
Brownbody: movement + sound + storytelling in modern dance + figure skating + theater to disrupt biased narratives and prompt audiences to engage as active participants in the journey.
The community conversation is in conjunction with an on ice artistic work in development performance, currently called Tracing Sacred Steps, in partnership with Walker Art Center and Northrop.
This event is presented by Brownbody in partnership with the Walker Art Center and East Side Freedom Library.
