The East Side Freedom Library and UFCW Locals 1189 and 663 invite you join a conversation, Bookstore Workers Organize: Not Just Something to Read About.
Register here to join this event on Zoom.
The past year saw significant developments in the labor movement—strikes to eliminate two-tier systems, raise wages, and improve safety precautions; local political campaigns to raise the minimum wage; organizing campaigns to unionize workplaces. History has been made at Starbucks, Amazon, the Walker Art Center, the Minnesota Historical Society—and at Half Price Books! In the midst of the pandemic and the economic crisis, workers have sought to improve their lives by organizing.
Join us to hear from workers and union activists from Half Price Books and from other bookstores around the country. Our panel will include workers from Washington, DC, Santa Cruz, California, Austin, Texas, and other locations. Learn what pushed them to organize; what strategies and tactics they have utilized; and what they hope to accomplish? How can shoppers support them? What can other workers learn from their experiences?
ESFL will convene a panel of workers who will tell their own stories. We hope this will open the door to a conversation with you, by Zoom. Bring your questions, your own experiences, your hopes for your future, and participate.
