Join us on Zoom for a stimulating theater presentation and discussion led by Ansa Akyea, Nora Montanez and Jane Froiland. Ansa, Nora and Jane will read two scenes from the NEWLY DEVELOPED play, Animate, that Mixed Blood Theatre will be producing at the Como Park Zoo from September 16 – 26. The readings will be followed by a discussion of the themes, tying in current events, personal values and narratives.

By Ken LaZebnik and Jack Reuler. Animate was created through a year of listening sessions with zookeepers, animal collection curators, zoo directors, primatologists and zoo detractors. Animate, an eight-scene moving theatrical experience performed at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, repeatedly asks the question: “Does the good of the many supersede the good of the individual?” The play deals with race and philanthropy, species preservation, conservation, education, etc. Go to this page to reserve tickets to see the show.

“On Stage: Creating a Community Dialogue Around Live Theater” is a fiscally sponsored program through Springboard for the Arts, and is designed to strengthen community support by reaching a wider “non-traditional” theater audience. This program aims to give participants a new perspective on the possibilities of live theater and in dramatic literature in general. Discussions touch on important ethical and civic questions, as well as other themes developed in the chosen works. In addition to community events, On Stage holds discussions in a variety of college and high school classes (in-person and online) in an effort to get a younger audience to see live theater.

In addition to this discussion with community members, On Stage will be facilitating 17 more discussions based around the play with over 300 Twin Cities college students! Go to: onstagemn.org for more info.

This discussion is is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
