In celebration of Women’s History Month at ESFL, join us for a conversation with scholar and author J.D. Zahniser, who will present “‘The Young are at the Gates’: Alice Paul and the 1917 Suffrage Pickets.”
In January 1917, militant suffrage leader Alice Paul inaugurated an ongoing demonstration at the White House of President Woodrow Wilson that resulted in the arrest and jailing of nearly 170 women. The picketing of the White House by women demanding the right to vote became a legendary protest illustrating the determination of suffragists and how far the Wilson administration would go to suppress dissent during the Great War. On the centennial of the women’s picket, join us for an evening about a president who tried to crush American freedoms and the young suffrage agitator who bested him.
J.D. Zahniser is an independent scholar and the co-author of Alice Paul: Claiming Power (Oxford, 2014). She frequently speaks and writes about Alice Paul and about the history of women. Dr. Zahniser is on the steering committee for the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial. She resides in St. Paul.
