This interview will be live-streamed on Facebook and archived on ESFL’s YouTube channel

This is the first of a planned series of interviews with creative musicians who make their homes and much of their music here in the Twin Cities. It’s been called “jazz” by some, “Black classical music” by others. Its performance encourages its listeners to stretch our imaginations towards visions of freedom. ESFL wants to acknowledge and document the achievements of these sonic artists, and to educate our community to better understand their work and its place in our lives.

We will begin this series with Douglas R. Ewart. He’s respected as a solid multi-instrumentalist and a devoted contributor to creative music, including the creation of his own instruments.  His steady, energetic solos on alto sax, flute, bass clarinet and bassoon have been heard in the bands led by Fred Anderson, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, and Chico Freeman. A Kingston, Jamaica native, Douglas moved to Chicago in 1963. He joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in 1967, studied theory and performance with Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman, and has continued to be part of the AACM community. For the past two decades, Douglas has been a leader in the creative music milieu in the Twin Cities and a mentor to many upcoming musicians.
