Opening Event: Why Treaties Matter

March 24, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm CDT

Event Navigation

Sunday, March 24, 2019, 2pm

This exhibit, developed by the Minnesota Humanities Center, explores the complicated history of treaty negotiations, agreements, and violations here in Minnesota. The East Side Freedom Library is pleased to host this exhibit and organize a series of public events in relationship to it from late March to late April, in partnership with the Lower Phalen Creek Project and our Dakota neighbors. We hope you will join us for several of these events and take part in conversations which explore not only our history, but also our present and future.

Our opening event, on March 24, will include smudge burning, drumming, spoken word, music and an opening song by Oyate Teca. Youth dancers from Wakinyan Luta Dance Society will come and exhibit their dance styles. We will also hear from Dakota elder and historian, Chris Mato Nunpa, Ph.D., who has long studied the impact of this history on all our communities.

Future events will take place on March 31, April 14, and April 28.
