Join us for a stimulating theater presentation and discussion led by Maria Asp, Austene Van and Jane Froiland. Maria, Austene and Jane will read two scenes from the newly developed play, The Most Beautiful Home … Maybe, a play that Mixed Blood Theatre hopes to produce in the near future. The readings will be followed by a discussion of the themes, tying in current events, personal values and narratives about housing insecurity and homelessness.

Created by Mark Valdez and Ashley Sparks, this experiment in art-based problem solving seeks to build cross-sector relationships, foster dialogue, influence housing policies and ultimately enact social change. It has been created by bringing together community stakeholders to investigate the issues in each city. Those perspectives will be embodied in community workshops to bring together relevant stakeholders including people experiencing housing insecurity, policymakers, commercial developers and community development corporations and advocates.

Tonight’s program is co-sponsored by the East Side Freedom Library and “On Stage: Creating a Community Dialogue Around Live Theater.” “On Stage” is a fiscally sponsored program through Springboard for the Arts, designed to strengthen community support by reaching a wider “non-traditional” theater audience. This program aims to give participants a new perspective on the possibilities of live theater and in dramatic literature in general. Discussions touch on important ethical and civic questions, as well as other themes developed in the chosen works. The East Side Freedom Library has been the incubator for the East Side Housing Justice Project, which has convened a Working Group on Housing Justice and a Community Advisory Council, has hosted several community film-screenings, information sessions, and discussions, and an East Side Housing Summit.
