“The Impeacher”
by David Anderson
Monday, July 23rd, 2018, 6:30pm
In 1868, Andrew Johnson became the first U.S. President to be impeached. The governor of a border state, Johnson had been selected by Abraham Lincoln as his running mate in 1864 as part of his strategy to hold the Union together in the midst of the Civil War. Upon Lincoln’s assassination less than a year later, Johnson became President and found himself embroiled in controversy over the nature of Reconstruction. He was challenged by the Radical Republicans, led by Thaddeus Stevens, who pushed for the disfranchisement of Confederates and the expropriation of their land, and the granting of full citizenship rights to newly freed African Americans. This was one of the most dramatic political conflicts in American history.
David Anderson is a long-time East Sider and the author/editor of four books, including Before the Dome: Baseball in Minnesota when the Grass was Real and Downtown: A History of Downtown Minneapolis and Downtown St. Paul in the Words of the People Who Lived It. His play, Shame of St. Paul, will be performed on August 17 at Swede Hollow Park.
Come learn about Thaddeus Stevens, whom Dave Anderson calls “the greatest American that almost no one has ever heard of.” A full cast will be reading the play.
